Philosophy

The school library media program guides students as they explore the world through reading and research. The teacher-librarian is an essential link connecting students, teachers, and others with information and pleasure reading.

Mission

The mission of the library media program is to ensure that students are enthusiastic readers and effective users of ideas and information.

Vision

The library media program plays a unique and pivotal role in the school's learning community. In addition to operating the library itself, the teacher-librarian works collaboratively with classroom teachers to promote reading and teach information and technology skills across the curriculum.

Standards

The library media program operates under the Information Literacy Standards for Student Learning enacted by the American Library Association.

Impact of Library Media Programs

Multiple studies have shown that a strong library media program has a direct impact on students' academic performance.

Library Behavior

The library is a lively place, and by no means silent. It is my hope that we will all find things to be excited about in the library, but it is also important to be respectful of others who are working around us. This means voice levels should be appropriate for small group work, not the playground. Books and other materials should be treated gently and students should help to straighten up after themselves.

Hours

The library is open from 9:10 until 3:10 daily. Mrs. Perry is in the building on Tuesday, Wednesday afternoon, and Thursday. Library volunteers keep the library open for book checkout at other times.

Kindergarten through third grade classes visit the library weekly for story time and beginning library skills. Fourth through sixth grade classes are seen on a flexible schedule for book talks, class research projects, and information and technology lessons, as well as other topics.

Students are always welcome to visit for research, browsing or reading, with a teacher's permission, with the exception of scheduled Kindergarten and first grade class times. K and 1st check out books during their class times, making it difficult for other students to receive the attention they need.

Checkout limits

• Kindergarten - 1 book
• First grade - 2 books
• Second through Sixth grades - 3 books

These limits do not include literature books assigned by the classroom teacher.

Reference books (encyclopedias, dictionaries, atlases, etc.) are labeled on the spine with the letters REF and most are for in-library use only. However, older copies of encyclopedias may be checked out. If you are not sure, ask!

Overdues and Renewals

Books are checked out to students for two weeks. Students with overdue books will be asked to return those books before taking out new ones. Books can be renewed once for two additional weeks. If more time is needed, an extra renewal may be possible, unless another peroson is waiting for that book.

Lost or Damaged Books

If a book is lost or damaged, the student is expected to pay for a replacement copy. A general guideline for book prices is $5 for a paperback and $15-20 for a hard cover book. If payment is a difficulty, other arrangements may be possible. Please see Mrs. Perry as soon as possible when a book is lost or damaged, so the library account can be cleared and the student may continue to check out books.
