Ø We believe the need for collaborative and reflective time among teachers is an essential ingredient of instruction.

Ø We believe a quality instructional program should include basic fundamental principles, while realizing each student is unique.

Ø We believe that instruction should include the use of innovative technology, which will meet the need of students for future success.

Ø We believe the curriculum should include appropriate teaching materials that will enable every child to develop academically, physically and emotionally to live successfully within a democratic society.

Ø We believe clearly stated expectations and a consistent discipline plan are conducive to learning and result in increased student performance and achievement.

Message from the Principal

We hope that the 2007-2008 school year at Highland Park Elementary will be one of positive and meaningful learning experiences for your child. We believe that parents, teachers, and children have a shared responsibility for the learning that takes place. We strive to develop a partnership, which will strengthen this process.

Every parent can help her/his child to succeed in school! To do this:

Believe in your child. Have high, but realistic, expectations.

Establish a daily routine for homework, chores and meals.

Offer to help in the classroom.

Model traits you want your child to have, such as self-discipline and a love of learning.

Emphasize the value of hard work. Don’t let your child blame teachers or bad luck for poor grades.

Monitor your child’s after-school activities.

Make time for reading, writing and family talks.

Be respectful when talking with or about teachers.

Help your child imagine how education will help her “get ahead” in life.

Foster individuality. Respect your child’s ideas, even when they’re different from yours.
