Readers are Leaders
Reading is a massive piece of the educational puzzle. Accelerated Reader enables Highland Park to create an environment where a child can learn to read and comprehend at a level that is appropriate for him.
Our PATHWAYS program will begin September 27, 2004. PATHWAYS is a combination of motivation and Accelerated Reader books and quizzes. The children take a STAR test which gives them a range in which they should read. The child then reads a book within that range and then takes a short quiz on the computer. The computer scores the quiz and gives the test taker immediate feedback. The student is given points according to their success rate on the quiz. Each child gets a printed report each time a quiz is taken that clarifies points as well as other valuable information. The quizzes encourage students to become enthusiastic readers who use successful reading strategies.
Second through sixth grade students read Accelerated Reader books and take comprehension quizzes on the computer. Students can be recognized for the percentage on the quiz, the number of books they read, and books read within their range. Mini-lessons are also taught to improve reading skills in all grades. Recognition can happen twice a month and at the end of the grading periods. Rewards are used, but the greatest rewards are readers who comprehend and enjoy reading.
